What are the college recruiting myths?

Recruiting Myths

Movies, books and media reports usually offer a distorted view of college recruiting.

Millions of kids dream of receiving a college athletic scholarship. The lucky ones are featured in the sports page of the newspaper. But the dreams of most go unfulfilled. That is a crushing reality, but there are ways to dramatically improve your chances of being recruited.

The perception most of us are familiar with goes like this: College coaches show up at a game or match and scout players that will help their team. The coach stops in the locker room afterward to say, “Good game. Have you thought about where you want to play in college?” Player and coach share a few minutes together with the promise of much more. Later the coach shows up at home to court the parents. Phone calls and official visits on campus follow. The story culminates with the athlete signing a National Letter of Intent and a college athletic scholarship to play at the school of his or her dreams!

After more than 20 years in the sports marketing industry, we can safely say we have never seen the perfect recruiting scenario. And we have been fortunate to work with some outstanding athletes in many sports.

The reality of recruiting is not what is portrayed in the movies or on television. The vast majority of parents and athletes, having never gone through the recruiting process, will be surprised to learn how it really works.
